I often use photography as a starting point in my work, having always been drawn to it.
By adding paint or other media to the work I try to enhance, extend or replicate what is already suggested by the original image or by the feeling it conveys.
Along with using traditional film, pinhole and digital photography I also transfer photographs onto wood. In 2014 I held an exhibition titled ‘Transfer’ exploring in detail this particular process and experimenting with the possibilities it offers - using different types of wood, including found wood and driftwood. I’m interested in photographic processes that allow serendipitous moments to occur, such as the details lost when transferring onto wood or the grain that shows through. I have also explored combining this with other mediums and ways of working to alter the photographs or push them in different directions. I prefer to let the image itself guide me in this process so that some become abstractions, others repeat themselves. Natural colours, forms and lines serve as my main inspiration.
